Oh..Well hello there...

After a really long hiatus, I figured it was time to dust off the old website. It sure has been a long time. I wish I had an excuse, but I don’t really. I had been dealing with a long expanse of self doubt and lack of inspiration. I’m sure many of you out there can relate. It’s like writer’s block. Except, for me, it was all things creative. I’ve been struggling to be satisfied with my work. I feel a lot better now, but we’ll see.

On the Art Front...

So I have been doing a lot of art in the past few months. I have just been keeping it a secret. I’ve been getting a lot better at my figure drawing. I am getting way more dynamic poses down that look both natural and with a lot of movement.

As you can see from the photo on the right here, Spider-Man is a major subject I’ve been studying. That, and Spider-Gwen. Partially because she also has cool dynamic poses, but also because she’s badass. I’m also trying to minimize my style so I don’t get caught up in the details. I’ve had varying degrees of success, but I think I’m getting the hang of approximating body parts. Also, I’m getting more comfortable with not knowing exactly where certain body parts are if they are obscured. I have made some drawings that I’m proud of and created a Spider-Man page to showcase some of them.

It’s really helped with my figure drawing and I’m seeing improvement for the first time in about 6 months. As I stated earlier, I was in kind of a rut. The pleasant way of sayin it was that I had hit a “plateau”. What this equates to was me deleting almost every drawing I had started with a few notable exceptions.

On the Writing Front...

I have been trying to get back into writing as well. I enjoy writing, but, like my art, I get frustrated with it and abandon a lot of the works I start. I am trying to get better at that. I think the trick is to start small and work my way up. So I started running a Werewolf: The Apocalypse game set in the World of Darkness. This is a tabletop RPG and requires me to improve my storytelling skills. Another side effect is that I am writing some narratives in between game sessions to flesh out the events in the game. Having characters doing things without the players present gives me creative freedom to set things up the way that I want. I also like the unpredictable nature of having player characters. They have a tendency to complete upend my plans and take the story in a direction I hadn’t anticipated.

I hesitate to share the narratives here as it lacks context for what my players are doing in game. It would be very separate pieces that wouldn’t really fit together. What I am hoping it will do is increase my confidence going forward and I will have more to write soon. I think I’m also impatient and I type slow. 😜

Well, that is a quick update and some new drawings for everyone. I hope this will be a renewed fervor for sharing my work. I want to get better at it. I cringe at the idea of “New Years Resolutions” because I feel like they’re usually shallow promised to myself. However, with the start of a new year I have a chance to continue habits of which I’ve fallen out. I’m ready to continue this journey and bring anyone along whose patient enough with me.
